Behind the Scenes: A Dangerous Method: The Talking Cure

David Cronenberg sought to authentically recreate Jung’s clinical practice for A Dangerous Method. In the film, Jung’s office is set up to mimic the actual space in which he practiced Freud’s radical new approach to patient care, with the doctor situated behind the patient so that his reactions would be hidden from view. In this intimate blocking session between Carl Jung (Michael Fassbender), Sabina Speilrein (Keira Knightley), David Cronenberg, and cinematographer Peter Suschitzky, one can see how the spatial relationship of the actors’ performance intersects with the realities and constraints of a technical film production.
